Frigoscandia to increase climate-controlled cargo via APM Terminals Gothenburg

With its facility close to the Nordic region’s largest container port, APM Terminals Gothenburg, Frigoscandia has a clear ambition to increase the flow of refrigerated and frozen foods via Gothenburg. According to Anders Orwinger, Vice President of Business Development & Sustainability at Frigoscandia, there is significant potential for supplying the Swedish food industry with goods via intermodal transport solutions.

With its long and eventful history, Frigoscandia has been an independent company since 2021, with a clear business plan aimed at supporting the Swedish and Nordic food industry with transport and warehousing. Now Frigoscandia wants to make increased use of the facilities available in Gothenburg and the opportunities that a large port offers.

"Disruptions to supply chains in recent years have been very noticeable in the smaller ports that don't have direct transport connections, as every transhipment becomes critical. We see great opportunities to strengthen our partnership with APM Terminals in Gothenburg and to make more use of direct shipping to both Asia and the USA. Our facility is geographically very close to the port, which means that we can turn containers around quickly and efficiently," says Anders Orwinger, President of Business Development & Sustainability at Frigoscandia.

Sustainable, intermodal food logistics

Food imports arrive at Frigoscandia’s plant in Gothenburg in temperature-controlled containers. The cargo is then stripped, labelled, quality checked and divided into smaller consignments, destined for the country’s wholesalers on pallets via Frigoscandia’s own trucks. Frigoscandia is now looking at how they can make better use of sustainable intermodal solutions.
"Although we use climate-efficient fuels in our vehicle fleet, rail is by far the most sustainable solution. The reach offered by APM Terminals rail connections also enables rapid injection into our distribution network, which provides a very strong service offering."

"The economic situation means retailers may need to take in more foodstuffs from other continents. Together with APM Terminals, Frigoscandia can offer the opportunity of importing volumes from Asia, packaging and labelling the cargo, and then transporting it by rail to the rest of the country, where the final stretch to the central warehouse goes by truck, just like any other Swedish supplier."

Hope of increased exports of Swedish food via Gothenburg

At present, Frigoscandia largely handles imports via Gothenburg, but Anders Orwinger strongly believes in the Swedish food industry’s export opportunities.

"We should be able to fill significantly more export containers with our Swedish brands and products. Swedish foodtech is very innovative and we have very well controlled and clean food production compared to many other countries. In addition, goods that are not stamped as premium products in Sweden could be in other countries, and despite inflation, purchasing power in Asia is good."
