Quarterly summary - record volumes and more efficient flows

At APM Terminals Gothenburg, the year started strongly - vastly increased imports, breaking all-time volume records, and faster gate flows have all been features of the first quarter.

6 out of 10 Swedish import containers pass through APM Terminals

2025 started with strong volume development at APM Terminals Gothenburg. In calendar week seven, the terminal reached the highest weekly volume in the port’s history, largely thanks to strong import flows.

'In the latest quarterly surveys, we can see that six out of ten Swedish import containers go via APM Terminals, a trend that looks set to continue. In the first quarter of the year alone, the total import volume increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2024, which clearly signals a strong and growing market', says Per Wahlström, market analyst at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

The increased imports create a favourable balance between imports and exports, which reduces the need for empty containers.

'We've seen a 28% reduction in empty containers in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year. Fewer handled and transported empty containers create a smoother, more sustainable and more cost-effective flow', says Per Wahlström.

Faster handling at the gate

At the same time, the terminal is continuing to improve its efficiency. In the first quarter of 2025, the average handling time for trucks was 31 minutes - four minutes faster than in the same period in 2024.

'A smooth and fast flow of trucks is very important for our customers. We've implemented several improvement measures and look forward to continuing the positive trend’, says Jasmin Mujdzic, Operational Manager at APM Terminals.
