Adaptability with reliable solutions: Varner’s strategy in an uncertain world of logistics
When global logistics challenges are making new demands on the fashion industry, Varner is in a strong position thanks to its agile strategy and the reliable logistics solutions between the manufacturing countries and APM Terminals Gothenburg. We met with Anna Sahlén, Import Manager, and Anders Eriksson, Supply Chain Director, to talk about how they've adapted their logistics and what opportunities they see ahead.
A smooth path from supplier to customer
Varner, one of the Nordic region’s leading fashion groups with brands such as Bik Bok, Carlings, Cubus and Dressmann, handles large flows of goods, mostly from Asia to APM Terminals in Gothenburg and on to its highly automated distribution centre in Vänersborg.
'Our manufacturing offices ensure quality and CSR requirements before the goods are shipped, and the shipping agent monitors the transport. When the goods arrive at APM Terminals, we send requests for delivery times to our warehouse', says Anna Sahlén.
In 2023, a newly built Autostore dedicated to online sales was completed as an extension of the existing warehouse.
'With the new solution, we can handle increased volumes and enable faster deliveries. An e-commerce customer can often receive their goods the day after ordering’, she continues.
Global shipping challenges require adaptation
Recent geopolitical events have put pressure on global supply chains, and Varner has needed to find new solutions to secure the supply.
'The situation in the Red Sea has extended lead times and increased shipping costs. In some cases, we've had to use air transport, even though we normally avoid it for cost and sustainability reasons', says Anders Eriksson.
To meet these challenges, Varner has intensified cooperation between logistics, purchasing and suppliers. Manufacturing and bookings have been brought forward, and the company now prioritises stability and predictability over short lead times.
'In 2025, we see lower shipping costs, but still long lead times and risk of disruptions, even if a return to safe passage through the Red Sea becomes possible', he continues.
A properly functioning shipping route to Gothenburg - a precondition
With the new alliances and the extended range of lines introduced at APM Terminals Gothenburg this spring, Varner can envisage exciting opportunities to further optimise its logistics.
'Immediate docking has worked well for us and given us the stability we've been looking for, but if the hub-and-spoke model can offer the predictability we need, it's definitely an option. We believe that we can use both models depending on the cost situation and reliability', says Anders Eriksson.
'A properly functioning shipping route to Gothenburg is a prerequisite for Varner’s supply chain. We believe that it's worked very well in recent years and that APM Terminals is proactive, drives innovation and development of infrastructure, and wants to have a healthy and constructive dialogue with ourselves, the importers. The service offering really covers our needs and we look forward to continued cooperation and hopefully fewer geopolitical disruptions in 2025', Anna Sahlén concludes.
