Flexible train planning in focus: meet our new Rail Planner Malek Jasem

Hi Malek! As APM Terminals Gothenburg's new Rail Planner, can you tell us about your role?
I am responsible for planning train time slots as efficiently as possible based on customer needs. I make sure that we have the right capacity and resources to handle trains on time.

What challenges do you face in your role?
As with all modes of transport, train traffic can encounter unexpected events that cause delays. We then make quick adaptations by rescheduling slot times, adding extra resources or finding other creative solutions. Whatever challenges our customers encounter outside the terminal gates, we always do our utmost to resolve or alleviate their problems once they arrive here.

APM Terminals is not only the largest port in the Nordic region, but also Sweden’s largest combi terminal. What makes rail management so successful?
We have the right infrastructure, with six railways running all the way into the terminal area and two dedicated rail cranes. This allows us to unload and load a full-length train in just 90 minutes, which is very competitive. In addition, our rail cranes are equipped with OCR (optical character recognition) to ensure correct handling and fast deviation handling.

But what is most important is our mindset – we always put the customer first and do everything we can to find flexible solutions to meet specific needs. The rail team are extremely committed – there is a strong willingness to always go the extra mile.

How is APM Terminals working to further streamline and optimise rail management?
We always strive for a continuous production flow where the cranes are in operation as much as possible. We plan the yard so that the load is always close to the tracks to maximise efficiency. Through careful data analysis, we continuously identify areas for improvement and work continuously to minimise activities that don't add customer value.

What advice would you give to customers so they get the most out of their rail transports?
I would advise them to optimise their train capacity utilisation as much as possible and to dare to cooperate with other players. This can effectively reduce their costs and climate impact. We are also ready to receive extra trains if necessary, even at short notice.
