The logistics flow of the future: Kappahl’s new logistics centre at APM Terminals
With more than 330 stores in five countries and growing online sales in 20 markets, Kappahl is one of the Nordic region’s leading fashion companies. The company is now taking a major step towards the logistics of the future with its new automated logistics centre in Arendal – right next to APM Terminals in Gothenburg.
The new logistics centre is designed to meet today’s and tomorrow’s requirements for an efficient and sustainable flow. According to Eva Meding, Logistics Manager at Kappahl Group, the new facility offers significantly increased capacity, higher service levels and a more sustainable logistics system.
Strategic choice for the future
The new logistics facility of just over 30,000 square metres will balance production between e-commerce and retail sales. It is expected to be ready for moving in in the autumn of 2026.
"We started looking at this project four years ago and analysed which location would be optimal for us. An important parameter was to establish ourselves as close to the port as possible. We have succeeded with the new facility – we couldn't possibly get closer," says Meding.
Sees the line offering from APM Terminals positively – “may be a game changer”
Kappahl’s production suppliers are mainly located in Asia, and using the direct line from Shanghai to APM Terminals has been a natural choice.
"Capacity and reliability are crucial for us. We need to know that the goods arrive as planned, at a port that has the capacity to receive them," says Meding.
In the first quarter of 2025, the traditional direct line to Asia will be discontinued and replaced by the new Gemini line network, which Kappahl views positively. "With fewer ports of call from Asia, we hope for better punctuality. If reliability can increase from 50% to 90%, it’s a real game changer for the industry."
Sustainability as a driving force
Sustainability is a given for Kappahl. The company has actively opted out of air transportation and is instead working on optimising planning to ensure that goods arrive on time.
"We focus a lot on high fill rates in both trucks and containers and work with suppliers to maximise efficiency in compaction. We would like to see as much as possible distributed with electric trucks to stores, even if this entails a higher cost. In parallel, we are in active dialogue with carriers to support the transition to alternative fuels," explains Meding.
For example, Kappahl uses Maersk’s Eco Delivery product at sea, and HVO100 and electricity as fuel for local onshore hauling of containers.
