New Policy for Improved Empty Container Handling
Starting September 1, APM Terminals will implement a new policy that prohibits the exchange of empty containers. This policy will undergo careful testing and evaluation throughout the autumn.
Enhancing Efficiency and Safety
APM Terminals is committed to optimizing terminal operations by reducing handling times. The practice of re-lifting and exchanging empty containers is both time-consuming and prone to creating gate queues, leading to higher costs for our customers. Moreover, spontaneous inspections by truck drivers present potential safety risks.
“The objective of this new policy is to create a more efficient, streamlined, and safer process for collecting and dropping off empty containers,” says Henrik Krona, Empty Depot Planner at APM Terminals Gothenburg.
Strengthened Quality Assurance and Streamlined Process for Damaged Containers
“To enhance the quality assurance of empty containers, we have introduced stricter inspection procedures,” Krona adds. If any damage is identified after the container has left the terminal, it is crucial to report it immediately.
“We need to investigate the cause of the damage, which allows us to improve our inspection process moving forward. Once the investigation is complete, we can arrange for the container to be repaired at its current location, avoiding unnecessary transport back to the terminal. This approach not only saves time and reduces costs but also minimizes the environmental impact,” Krona concludes.
Reporting Damage
If damage is discovered after the container has left the terminal, customers are advised to submit a claim. For more details, please visit our website: APM Terminals Claims Procedure. APM Terminals is only liable for damage that could reasonably be detected during inspection. Damage occurring after the container has left the terminal will not be compensated.
