Dynamic Vessel Planning in an Unpredictable World: "We Have a Crucial Service Responsibility Towards Sweden"
APM Terminals in Gothenburg serves as the central hub for Sweden’s international trade, handling over half of the country’s cargo. Each week, the terminal accommodates up to 15 vessels, ranging from smaller feeder ships to large ocean-going vessels. To gain insight into how the Nordic region’s largest container terminal manages dynamic vessel planning and the constant race against time, we spoke with Berth Planner Emin Herc.
What is most important in your work as a Berth Planner?
"Weather, global instability, technical issues, and sudden route changes are just a few of the factors that impact my work. Every port call carries risks, and since APM Terminals Gothenburg is often the final port in a loop, it’s common for ships to arrive outside their proforma window. Therefore, it’s vital to handle deviations quickly, smoothly, and transparently. However, the most important aspect of my role is prioritizing our customers' needs, regardless of the challenges we face."
Despite challenging external factors, APM Terminal’s shipping customers are more satisfied than ever. How have you achieved this?
"Shipping is naturally dynamic, and we continuously adapt to new conditions and requirements. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that vessels depart on time, even when faced with significant delays or other disruptions, without ever compromising safety. We place a strong emphasis on fulfilling our promises to customers, a quality that is frequently praised. Our success stems from our committed workforce, a high level of transparency, and our ongoing efforts to improve and streamline operations."
How does APM Terminals manage vessel scheduling challenges?
"During my two years at APM Terminals Gothenburg, we have never denied service to a ship, no matter how late it arrives. Assisting delayed ships in getting back on schedule provides immense value to shipping companies, not only in terms of cost savings but also by reducing emissions. This is increasingly important as vessels transition to more environmentally friendly, albeit more expensive, fuels.
We also have a critical service responsibility towards Sweden. As the only port in the country capable of accommodating ocean-going vessels, refusing service could result in shortages of food, medicine, and other essential goods. This is why we ensure that we find creative solutions, even under the most challenging circumstances. A key element is our close collaboration with other Nordic APM terminals, which facilitates the redirection of rotations when necessary."
What trends do you see in vessel planning?
"Emission reduction is a top priority for shipping companies, with many now opting for ‘slow steaming’—operating at lower speeds to reduce fuel consumption. This shift places greater demands on ports to minimize vessels' call times, also known as 'port hour stay.' APM Terminals Gothenburg is leading the way in this area and is now helping other major continental ports achieve similar goals.
Another significant trend is digitalization. This autumn, we are launching Digital Port Call, a tool developed by Göteborgs Hamn AB, expected to enhance planning, create a more transparent flow of information, and make maritime logistics both more sustainable and efficient."
