Three new Pier 400 cranes lift ability, agility, and flexibility

Late November last year, the team at Pier 400 at the Port of Los Angeles captured video of three new state-of-the-art Ship-to-Shore cranes, an arrival that marks a major step forward in the terminal’s commitment to operational excellence.

The addition of these larger cranes will be felt by customers, providing the terminal with greater flexibility to increase crane density, and speed ship turn times so that our customers experience a consistent supply chain to meet their own customers' needs.

"In my 25 years I've seen many changes in vessel and crane size," says Pier 400 Head of Labor Relations, Kurt Sulzbach. "Now, with the change in the market, it's a game changer to have assets to meet the needs of growing vessels and growing cranes."

Game-changer

"We are not reliant on the tide, we are not reliant on the way cargo is stowed at origin. This gives flex to our customers to meet their needs," says Sulzbach, who also credited the in-house talent and experience provided by the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) who will optimise the benefits to be gained in having the new cranes.

"The men and women of the ILWU play a very important role in these cranes we bring online, they are responsible for commissioning and maintaining these cranes throughout their life expectancy. Their skill and knowledge translates into performance for our customers.

“Our goal is to be a leader in our industry. Whether in technology, partnering with our workforce or driving value for our customers. These three cranes symbolise our commitment to be a leader not only in the Port of Los Angeles, but in the United States."
