APM Terminals Los Angeles facilitates pioneering Australian energy project with 42-ton moves

APM Terminals Los Angeles recently undertook the critical task of transporting 100 advanced battery storage units weighing 42 tons apiece to Australia for the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, one of the world’s largest energy storage projects. Spearheaded by Australia’s State Electricity Commission (SEC) and renewable energy investor Equis Australia, the Hub will have the capacity to power up to 200,000 homes during peak periods once operational in 2025, supporting Victoria's goal of 95% renewable energy by 2035.

Specialized handling for specialized cargo

battery-700Moving the specialized “out-of-gauge” cargo requires meticulous planning. APM Terminals personnel were at the forefront of this operation, showcasing their proficiency in handling oversized and hazardous materials. The units, exceeding standard container dimensions, needed flat racks and special handling procedures to ensure their safe passage from Los Angeles to Melbourne.

“Not everyone can pull this off,” said Patrick Harmon, Value Added Services (VAS) Manager. “Our team has the experience and skill needed to execute the task with precision. Proper rigging is crucial to protect this valuable cargo while ensuring the safety of the people who are moving it, so everyone goes home safe.”

The team’s ability to design tailored cargo solutions, secure flat racks, and facilitate seamless loading onto container vessels underscores the technical expertise and logistical acumen that defines APM Terminals. Each step of the process was executed with precision and care, ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

“Successful operations like these are only possible through effective communication and coordination among all parties involved," said VAS Operations Director William Juarez. “As a cohesive team, we have the agility and capability to safely load out-of-gauge and breakbulk cargo across all shifts.”
