Lazaro Cardenas Officially Opens
The President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto was joined by the Prime Minister of Denmark Lars Løkke Rasmussen, for the official opening of APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas, Latin America’s most technologically-advanced container terminal, on April 4th. Also included among the distinguished guests participating in the event was the Governor of Michoacan State, home to the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Silvano Aureoles Conejo, and Maersk Group CEO Søren Skou.
The completed Phase I of the new semi-automated deep-water terminal represents an additional annual throughput capacity of 1.2 million TEUs to Mexico’s second-busiest container port. At full build-out in 2030, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas will provide an annual throughput capacity of more than four million TEUs.
The terminal received its first official vessel call on February 27, 2017 with the arrival of the 9,600 TEU capacity Maersk Salalah, on the Maersk AC2 Transpacific service from Asia. With a 750-meter quay and a depth of 16.5 meters, deep enough to accommodate the latest generation of Ultra-Large Container Ships. The terminal is equipped with five intermodal rail tracks and offers automated gate services.
APM Terminals also operates APM Terminals Yucatán, on the Gulf of Mexico, and well as Inland Services facilities. Mexico handled 5.66 million TEUs in 2016, behind only Brazil and Panama in Latin American port container traffic volume.
