New Aqaba Record

The 13,265 TEU capacity MV Unayzah, an Ultra-Large Containership (ULCS) operated by United Arab Shipping on the Asia/Red Sea Container Service (ARC1), became the largest vessel to call the Port of Aqaba, arriving on August 3rd.

Aqaba Container Terminal’s Chief Operating Officer Robert Snow officially welcomed the vessel to Jordan’s primary port, and presented a commemorative plaque to the ship’s Captain commemorating the maiden call at the Red Sea facility. The  ARC1 service  is  an  eight-vessel, fixed-day weekly string linking the ports of Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Shekou and  Port  Klang to the  Red  Sea, with direct calls at Jeddah,  Sokhna  and  Aqaba.  The Westbound leg of the service also calls the ports of Djibouti and Singapore.

The MV Unayzah is one of nine A13 Class 13,500 TEU capacity vessels deployed by the United Arab Shipping Company (UASH), which currently ranks 11th in global container fleet capacity, operating 56 vessels with a combined capacity of 541,000 TEUs. The UASH ULCS fleet also includes nine A15 Class vessels of 15,000 TEU capacity, and six A19 Class vessels of 18,800 TEU capacity.  There are currently 364 ULCS of 10,000 TEU capacity or greater in the global container fleet, with another 194 on order.

Part of the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network, ACT, in which APM Terminals holds a   50% share, provides 1,000   meters of quay, and an annual container throughput capacity of 1.3 million TEUs, with two new STS cranes capable of a 22 container-row reach to handle ULCS calls.

“The arrival of 13000-plus TEU capacity vessels into Aqaba and ACT is not only a great achievement for ACT following the recent expansion of the terminal, but also a sign of confidence in our   operational performance and capabilities by one of the leaders of the global shipping industry” said Mr. Snow.

ACT, which handled 767,000 TEUs in 2015, has seen container volume increase by 9.3% in 2016.
