Lima Metro Trains Delivered to Callao

On November 3rd the first of 20 new trains destined for the Peruvian capital’s Lima Metro were delivered at the APM Terminals Callao terminal. Manufactured in Spain, the rail cars were loaded at the Port of Barcelona onto the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ro/Ro vessel Toronto.

Lima Metro, also known as Tren Eléctrico, is the rapid transit metropolitan railway serving the eight million population of Lima, and its suburbs.

APM Terminals was selected by the Peruvian Government to operate Terminal Muelle Norte at the Port of Callao, now operating as APM Terminals Callao, in 2011, and assumed control of the facility in July 2011 under a 30-year concession. The facility is being developed into a modern multi-purpose terminal for containers, general cargo such as Ro-Ro, break bulk, project cargo, solid & liquid bulk as well as cruise ships representing an investment of over USD $750 million. Work on the expansion started in October 2012 and at full build out the terminal will be able to handle 2.9 million TEUs and 9.9 million tons of non?containerized cargo. Phase I and II construction began in March 2013. The Port of Callao, the busiest container port of the west coast of South America.
