Ghana Inland Services Award
APM Terminals Ghana Ltd., which operates a bonded Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Ghana’s primary port of Tema, was named the winner of the Port/Terminal category of the Ghana Shippers Awards ’17, held on June 30th in Ghana’s Capital City of Accra. The award ceremony, in its first year, “provides a platform to recognize individuals and companies that play a significant role in the growth and development of the industry while recognizing the key functions within the industry that promote growth and sustainability”. The new annual event is organized by the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, with the support of the Ghanaian Ministry of Transport.
Beginning operations in 2013, APM Terminals Ghana was one of five nominees in the category, which recognizes “an operator of a container, general cargo or specialist terminal who has demonstrated consistently high levels of performance, commercial success and has also shown a commitment to invest and expand”. The selection is based upon criteria which include “customer service and efficiency; investments in infrastructure and equipment; productivity levels, commercial performance; and improvements in safety and environmental awareness”.
Tema Port, which opened in 1962, is the West African nation’s primary port, handling approximately 85% of Ghana’s seaborne trade. Meridian Port Services (MPS), which operates at the Port of Tema, is a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and Meridian Port Holdings, itself a joint venture between APM Terminals and the Bolloré Group. A USD $1 billion port expansion project announced in 2014 will add over 3 million TEUs in annual port throughput capacity, along with facilities for non-containerized cargo, creating a new trading hub for West Africa. Container throughput at MPS, which handles approximately 80% of Tema’s container volume, was 744,000 TEUs in 2016.
