Cooperation in Cameroon
APM Terminals’ global terminal network facility Douala International Terminal (DIT), in Cameroon, was able to benefit from the experience and expertise of colleagues from APM Terminals Bahrain to increase productivity and share Best Practices in terminal support operations.
Mr. Elias Jumas, an experienced Manager with APM Terminals Bahrain, made two separate visits to DIT to assist in improving inventory control processes for DIT’s spare parts storage center; in January for four weeks, and again in November for an additional three weeks. During these sessions he shared his expertise on implementing the 5S improvement program, offered advice on storage layout and organization, and provided guidance in inventory counting and management, and the generation of inventory and usage reports.
“The most significant achievement is the level of collaboration and share learning between two terminals which are geographically and culturally very different,” said DIT Managing Director Ségolène Drogy.
The Port of Douala, situated in the Gulf of Guinea, serves as a trade gateway for Central Africa. APM Terminals holds a minority share in DIT, which was selected for the concession to manage and operate the facility in July 2004 and began operations in January 2005. DIT, with a 27 hectare (67 acre) yard, is equipped with three berths with a 7-meter (23-foot) draft, and two mobile cranes.
