Cai Mep School Safety Program

APM Terminals together with the AIP Foundation, a road safety nonprofit organization, has introduced a new training program to reduce the risk of roadway accidents in the Vietnamese port community of Cai Mep. More than 45 truck drivers, executives and other employees from the APM Terminals-operated Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), joined 500 students, teachers, and parents at the neighboring Tran Quoc Toan Primary School to address road safety issues. CMIT, in which APM Terminals holds a 49% share, is located in the Ba Ria?Vung Tau Province, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

The school event was the inaugural activity of the “Lifting Safety” program, a proactive road safety initiative developed by the AIP Foundation and APM Terminals which will provide nearly 1,000 helmets, and road safety education classes to children at the Tran Quoc Toan and Toc Tien primary schools. Vietnamese traffic safety committees at both the National and provincial level have worked closely with APM Terminals and the AIP Foundation in developing and implementing the program. The goal of the Lifting Safety outreach is to identify and mitigate road safety risks in the community near the busy port facility through a combination of targeted education, awareness, and community engagement programs.

A study commissioned by APM Terminals, and conducted by the AIP Foundation in October 2016, found that while most students in the region commuted to school by motorcycle, only 35% of students at Tran Quoc Toan Primary School and 19% of students at Toc Tien Primary School wore safety helmets while on their way to or from school, despite significant traffic safety issues such as congested, mixed-vehicle use roads and the absence of separate motorcycle lanes.

Vietnamese ports handled 10.6 million TEUs in 2015, representing an annual growth rate of 16% over 2014. Of these, 7.2 million TEUs were handled by Saigon area facilities, accounting for more than two thirds (68%) of the total throughput. A deep-water facility in which APM Terminals holds a 49% share, CMIT began operations in March 2011.
