Cai Mep International Terminal Welcomes ULCS
18,000 TEU “Triple E-Class” Margrethe Maersk sets new record as largest vessel to call a Vietnamese Port.
Cai Mep, Vietnam – The 18,000 TEU capacity Margrethe Maersk, one of 20 Triple E-Class vessels in the Maersk Line fleet, became the largest vessel to call at the Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), and the largest vessel ever to call at a port in Vietnam on February 20th, when it arrived from the Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas as part of the AE5 Service. The Margrethe Maersk call is a trial run for CMIT, part of the APM Terminals global terminal network; the previous vessel size record for the port, and Vietnam was set by the 14,000 TEU capacity CSCL Star, in October 2015. During the 6.33 hour call, 300 containers were discharged, for a berth productivity rate of 92.31 MPH.
The Cai Mep port complex is one of the world’s fastest growing ports, serving the Ho Chi Minh City area’s commercial and population center in southern Vietnam as trade and economic growth continues at a rapid pace. In 2016, the previously underutilized terminal of CMIT handled over 1.2 million TEUs, representing a container volume increase in excess of 200% over the 2014 throughput result.
“The arrival of the Margrethe Maersk is a major milestone for CMIT and for Vietnam, as it demonstrates that this terminal can also serve as a regional transshipment hub for Southeast Asian cargoes, particularly destined for the Vietnam/USA and Vietnam/Europe trade lanes,” noted CMIT Managing Director, Robert Hambleton.
Vietnamese ports handled 11.28 million TEUs in 2016, representing an annual growth rate of 5.8 % over 2015, the year which grew 16% over 2014. In 2016, 7.94 million TEUs were handled in South Vietnam, accounting for 70% of the country’s throughput. Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), a deep-water facility in which APM Terminals is a shareholder, began operations in March 2011. Located in the Ba Ria?Vung Tau Province, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, CMIT is currently the only terminal in Vietnam capable of accommodating larger deep-draft vessels. The UN has forecast a 6.3% economic growth rate for Vietnam in 2017, and 6.5% for 2018.
