Algeciras Safety Record
APM Terminals Algeciras finished 2016 with a new Safety Performance record of a Lost-Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) rate of 1.6 per million man-hours worked. This was achieved while handling approximately 3.8 million TEUs over the course of the year, including steadily growing vessel calls by Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS). The Algeciras terminal also became the first container facility in Spain to earn the International Occupational Health and Safety Management Standard (OSHAS) 18001 Certification. The OSHAS training provides a framework for the effective management of Occupational Safety and Health, including all aspects of risk management and legal compliance. The 1.6 LTIF rate was the lowest in a decade for the APM Terminals Algeciras.
The Port of Algeciras, located in southern Spain at the Gibraltar Strait, is the largest container port on the Mediterranean Sea and has become one of the most important and modern transshipment terminals in the world. Algeciras handled a combined 4.76 million TEUs in 2016, or approximately 80% of all container traffic for the port. The port’s annual growth rate of 5.4% enabled it to overtake Valencia once again for leadership in container traffic among Spanish ports.
