Cai Mep 14,000 TEU Vessel Call

On October 29, 2015 Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), located southeast of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam’s Ba Ria?Vung Tau Province, received the maiden call of the Ultra-Large Container Ship (ULCS) CSCL Star, a 14,000 TEU capacity vessel deployed in the Ocean 3 Alliance. The CSCL call marked the beginning of the first direct liner service between Vietnam and Northern Europe. Notably, two feeder services also began service to CMIT in October, providing links for local Vietnamese export cargo and the international export cargo from Thailand and Cambodia transshipped at CMIT, one of Vietnam’s few operating deep-water facilities.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport, Vinamarine and the VMS played major roles in making CMIT a regional player for ULCS service by supporting the dredging of the Cai Mep channel to a depth of 13.2 meters at low water, completing the project in time to receive the CSCL Star.

Vietnamese ports handled 9.14 million TEUs in 2014, representing an annual growth rate of 13.8% over 2013. Of these, 6.5 million TEUs were handled by Saigon area facilities, accounting for more than two thirds (71%) of the total throughput. The Port of Haiphong, in northern Vietnam, handled 1 million TEUs in 2014, or 11% of the national total. Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), a deep-water facility in which APM Terminals is a shareholder, began operations in March 2011, and handled 403,000 TEUs in 2014.
