APM Terminals sums up the summer: 'reliable delivery despite the challenges of the summer'
As summer draws to a close, APM Terminals Gothenburg takes this opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past few months. Jasmin Mujdzic, the terminal's Operational Manager, highlights the key developments that have shaped their operations.
Steady Vessel Management Amid Global Challenges
This summer, geopolitical tensions and unstable weather conditions around the Cape of Good Hope caused disruptions at several major European ports. These factors, combined with a significant rise in import volumes, also impacted APM Terminals Gothenburg. Despite these challenges, the terminal successfully maintained a high level of vessel management throughout the season.
"Since early June, only 70% of vessels have arrived on time, yet 96% have departed within their proforma window," Mujdzic reports. "We’re proud to have assisted our shipping customers in sticking to their often-tight schedules."
Even with 60% of the southern quay temporarily out of service due to the Skandia Gateway project, APM Terminals Gothenburg accommodated additional vessels in need of service during the summer.
"Proactive planning has been a key factor in our success. We continuously seek ways to optimize terminal operations in response to prevailing conditions. The dedication and problem-solving skills demonstrated by our employees this summer have not only impressed me but have also made me proud," Mujdzic adds.
Reliable Rail Operations and Record-Breaking Volumes in July
Throughout the summer, APM Terminals Gothenburg has been upgrading and future-proofing its rail cranes and tracks to boost efficiency. Close collaboration with customers and partners has ensured the smooth operation of rail traffic, even amid ongoing improvements.
"In fact, we achieved a record in rail volumes in July, with an 18% increase compared to the same month last year," Mujdzic notes.
Streamlined Gate Operations
During the summer, trucks passing through APM Terminals' gates averaged a processing time of just 28 minutes, a significant improvement from the beginning of the year.
"Gate handling times initially increased when construction on the Skandia Gateway project began. However, after restructuring the yard and implementing various efficiency measures, we’ve reduced the handling time to under 30 minutes," Mujdzic concludes.
