New Policy for More Efficient Management of Empty Containers
Effective September 1st, APM Terminals will implement a new policy stipulating that exchanges of empty containers will no longer be permitted upon pickup. This policy will be tested throughout the autumn and will be carefully evaluated.
Reduced Handling Times and Increased Safety
APM Terminals is continuously striving to optimize operations and minimize handling times at the terminal. Re-loading and exchanging loaded empty containers are time-consuming and can lead to congestion at the gates, which in turn increases costs for our customers.
Additionally, unscheduled inspections conducted by truck drivers pose potential safety risks. The goal of the new policy is to create a more efficient, streamlined, and safer process for the pickup and drop-off of empty containers.
Enhanced Quality and Smoother Processes in case of Container Damage
To further strengthen our quality assurance of empty containers, we have now introduced stricter controls in our inspections. Should damage be detected after the container has left the terminal, it is crucial that this is reported immediately.
We need to investigate what has occurred and simultaneously have the opportunity to improve our inspection process for the future. After the investigation, compensation can be offered for repairs where the container is located, thereby eliminating the need for unnecessary transport back to the terminal. This not only saves time and costs but also contributes to reducing the environmental impact.
What to Do If a Damage Is Detected?
If damage is discovered on the container after it has left the terminal, customers are encouraged to submit a claim. The claim must be submitted by the container owner. Information can be found on our website: APM Terminals Claims Procedure
APM Terminals is only responsible for damages that could reasonably be detected during inspection, and damages that occur after the container has left the terminal will not be compensated.
If you have questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at depotplan.got@apmterminals.com
How do I submit a claim?
You can find more information on how to submit a claim regarding damages to an empty container on our website: APM Terminals Claims Procedure
Who can submit a claim?
The claim must be submitted by the container owner.
What costs are compensated?
Each case is evaluated by our Claims team. APM Terminals is only responsible for damages that could reasonably be detected during inspection. Damages that occur after the container has left the terminal will not be compensated. For example, if a container is issued damaged, lifting and transportation costs may be compensated, while costs that could have been avoided will not be reimbursed.
Can I repair the damage at a location other than APM Terminals and still receive compensation?
If a container is repaired at the loading site instead of being returned to APM Terminals, these costs may be reimbursed. This applies only to minor repairs that were approved by the shipping line prior to the repair, such as cleaning and compliant patching of holes, etc.
What information does claims need to evaluate compensation?
Document and take photos of the damage. It is important that the location of the damage and the container number are clearly indicated. We need information on the pickup time, booking number, container number, costs, and photos of the damage. Costs must be justifiable/evidential.
How is your claim handled?
When we receive a compensation claim, we review the documentation and compare it with data and information we obtain. We will also compare the submitted photographs with those taken upon entry and exit from the terminal.
When must a claim be submitted?
Submit the compensation claim as soon as possible and no later than one week after the container has been picked up from the terminal. This is to simplify troubleshooting and obtain the correct information.
What response time can be expected?
You can expect to receive a response regarding how the matter will be handled within one week after submitting a compensation claim.
