APM Terminals expands empty container depot to meet rising export demands

With increasing export volumes, especially of forestry products, the need for empty containers is increasing. To meet the growing demand, APM Terminals is expanding its empty depot by more than 10,000 square metres, providing space for an additional 1,600 TEU.

In the first five months of this year alone, export volumes via APM Terminals Gothenburg increased by 9% compared to the same period last year. In order for Swedish exporters to secure their flows, they need access to empty containers.

"Although import volumes are getting back on track, exports are increasing even more. This increase is expected to continue without slowing. With this, an imbalance arises that needs to be managed by having continuous access to empty containers for export goods," explains Per Wahlström, market analyst at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

To meet the need for empty containers, APM Terminals has signed a contract for a new storage area. "The new storage area is strategically located next to Conspect, the company responsible for inspecting and preparing all empty containers before they are taken into use. Trucks collecting containers from this new area can enjoy a shorter, more efficient flow," says Henrik Krona, responsible for the empty depot at APM Terminals.

The new storage area is expected to be available to APM Terminals by November 2024.
