Demand for rail solutions from all over Sweden to APM Terminals Gothenburg continues to increase

According to rail expert Svante Altås at APM Terminals Gothenburg, demand for climate-smart and reliable container freight by rail has hit record levels. In 2022, APM Terminals welcomed ten new shuttles, and we expect to be receiving the same number in the coming year.

Since APM Terminals Gothenburg launched the Green Gothenburg Gateway concept, which involves linking rail solutions from all over the country with direct shipping from APM Terminals in Gothenburg, demand for rail solutions from all parts of Sweden to Gothenburg has increased significantly. Today, APM Terminals is handling 75 shuttles a week, which corresponds to 5,200 containers.

"It's clear that there's a great need for finding routes that lead to Gothenburg and beyond. This year alone, we welcomed ten new shuttles and new destinations to our rail network. We're seeing particularly high demand from industrial companies in north of Sweden," says Svante Altås, Sr. Sales executive and rail expert at APM Terminals Gothenburg. "I’m not surprised by the development. The railway offers high reliability and great climate benefits, which has been very important to the market in recent years".

Extended Railway Capacity in 2023

With the new track plan for 2023 (T23), we're happy to announce that capacity at APM Terminals in Gothenburg will increase by up to a further ten shuttles and at least three new destinations. At the same time, APM Terminals Gothenburg is introducing an OCR portal on the terminal’s railway tracks, in order to be able to offer real-time information about which units are arriving and leaving the port. The OCR portal also scans all containers to detect any deficiencies in time.

In order to further streamline handling and create more rail capacity next year, there will be the opportunity to test the brakes inside the terminal area. “This measure is expected to save 24 hours per week, which gives us the opportunity of receiving new shuttles and dealing with deviations even more flexibly,” says Svante Altås.

"On behalf of APM Terminals, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all partners for making this important development possible. Everyone from Port of Gothenburg to those who switch in our trains, the people who haul the trains and of course the train operators that sell, plan and administer the trains," Svante Altås concludes.
