New quay for short-sea traffic ready in spring
In spring 2022, the new quay for short-sea traffic will be completed. This new investment enables flexible and environmentally-friendly short-sea shipping from Gothenburg within Europe.
Intensive work is currently under way to renovate and strengthen the western quay at APM Terminals Gothenburg to prepare for the new short-sea service. The work is being carried out together with Göteborgs Hamn AB.
"As Sweden’s largest trading port, it is natural to meet customers’ demand for full service. That’s why we’re expanding our already broad offering with a quay dedicated to short-sea traffic," says Dennis Olesen, Managing Director at APM Terminals Nordic.
Expected to be completed in spring 2022, the quay will be equipped with special resources for short-sea service as well as three cranes that have been moved and upgraded to handle smaller vessels.
"The pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in the global supply chain which combined with existing macro trends in changing consumer demands, accelerated digitization, technology and automation enabling cost effective near- or onshoring. This has meant that cargo owners have chosen to move all or parts of their production and storage closer to their markets, which will only increase the demand for a flexible and sustainable short-sea offering," continues Dennis Olesen.
An environmentally friendly alternative to road transport
Since 2019, APM Terminals has been heavily investing in the Green Gothenburg Gateway, a project to enable efficient freight transportation with the least possible environmental impact. An important part of this work is to create the conditions for moving goods to rail and shipping.
"Sea shipping plays a key role in effective and sustainable freight transportation within Europe. The short-sea investment answers the market’s increased demand for climate-efficient transport perfectly," says Dennis Olesen.
What does this mean for global customers?
This upgraded service will make Intra-European traffic to all parts of Sweden more efficient via Gothenburg. Sweden is the fifth largest country in Europe, larger than Germany and Italy, with strong purchasing power and active international trade. The inland transportation possibilities via rail to all of Sweden provides a unique opportunity for triangulating goods and container flow in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way. In addition, this short-sea investment will also create new logistic opportunities e.g., transshipment opportunities via Gothenburg.
