Deeper port = faster way to the world market
Sweden is export dependent. A well-functioning flow of goods is therefore crucial to our competitiveness. Transshipments delay transports and increase costs for businesses and consumers. The prerequisite for a more efficient flow, and in the long run, higher competitiveness for Swedish companies, is transport with large ocean-going vessels directly from Sweden.
As the largest port in Scandinavia, APM Terminals Gothenburg is well placed to handle the largest ocean vessels, but the depth of water in the fairway limits the full capacity of the port long-term. The vessels are getting larger and larger and to meet future needs, a deepening of the port is planned. Dredging of the thoroughfare is planned to start in 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2026. Something Henrik Kristensen, CEO of APM Terminals, with support from the business community wishes to start earlier.
- The transport time from Gothenburg directly to Shanghai is currently 35 days. It is at least a week faster than from other ports in Sweden. It is the most cost-effective solution with the lowest climate impact and our concept, The Gothenburg Gateway, is based on being able to offer a direct departure every 48 hours with the three largest alliances in the world. To utilize the total cargo capacity of the largest vessels, a deeper port is needed. Sweden does not get the best competitiveness if we wait five years to start the dredging work, says Henrik Kristensen, CEO of APM Terminals.
