APM Terminals Spanish Gateways partners with start-ups to reduce CO2 emissions by 20,000 tonnes

APM Terminals Spanish Gateways has teamed up with local entrepreneurs from the technology sector to make progress in the search of an innovative solution for customers and, above all, for the environment.

The project was made public during European Mobility Week, although it was conceived during a Kaikaku Kaizen Week, an event held in Valencia, sponsored by Morten Engelstoft, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals, and promoted by Carlos Arias, Managing Director of APM Terminals Spanish Gateways. The goal of the Kaikaku Kaizen Week was used to identify areas of continuous improvement, as well as opportunities for radical change with a project that makes a difference in the sector.

With these goals in mind, a team made up of people from all functions of the company used Lean methodology and large doses of energy and motivation, to listen to the voice of the customers, understand their processes, gather all the information and use their combined brains and knowledge.

The initial idea evolved into a solution that will help the containerised port transport sector to reduce CO2 emissions.  According to APM Terminals' calculations, this future solution, still under development, is set to avoid more than 20,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Kaikaku Kaizen Week

APM Terminals Spanish Gateways was one of 17 terminals this year, that have organised Kaikaku Kaizen Events to work on their strategic objectives accompanied by members of their respective local and global management teams.

"People from all functions contributed and demonstrated their passion at the Kaikaku Kaizen Event in Valencia, with discussions getting better and better and, what I like most, with people having fun and becoming an even better team," said Igor Van den Essen, Head of Terminals Europe for APM Terminals.

With the idea presented to local start-ups, the APM Terminals Spanish Gateways team will continue developing the product which is set tohelp its customers and the container transport industry to become more sustainable.
