Barcelona Container Record

APM Terminals Barcelona established a new record for the terminal by handling 4,607 container movements on May 21st on the Ultra-Large Container Ship (ULCS) OOCL Brussels, a 13,208 TEU capacity vessel deployed by the Ocean Alliance. The previous container handling record for APM Terminals Barcelona was 4,158 containers loaded onto and off of the 13,092 TEU capacity Maersk Edison, in July 2014.

The OOCL Brussels is part of the Hong-Kong-based OOCL’s 107 vessel fleet. OOCL is a member of the Ocean Alliance along with French-based CMA-CGM, China-based COSCO Shipping, and Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine. The ship part of the Ocean Alliance’s Far East/Europe services.

The Port of Barcelona’s container throughput of 2.23 million TEUs in 2016 ranked as Spain’s third-largest container port volume, after the Ports of Algeciras and Valencia. APM Terminals acquired Terminal de Contenedores de Barcelona in March 2016 as part of the acquisition of Grup TCB’s terminal portfolio, rebranding the facility as APM Terminals Barcelona in July 2016. The terminal handled 741,000 TEUs in 2016. ULCS of 10,000 TEU capacity and greater are becoming an increasingly larger share of vessel calls at key global port gateways.
