APM Terminals Barcelona welcomes 3 new Triple-E STS cranes

Discharge of the machinery from the Zhen Hua 35 onto the quayside will take place over the next few days

The South Quay of the port of Barcelona today received three of the new Triple-E Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, currently the largest and with the greatest operational capacities in the port, acquired from ZPMC. This acquisition is part of the ambitious modernisation plan of APM Terminals Barcelona to reinforce its strategic position in the Mediterranean and offer a more agile and efficient service to the latest generation of container ships.

The machinery has arrived on board the vessel Zhen Hua 35, which is also carrying a rail-mounted gantry crane (RMG), which will reinforce intermodal operations with the railway, and an electric straddle carrier included in the pilot project for electrification led by APM Terminals Barcelona.

Regarding the unloading of the first three STSs, the company has brought forward part of the planned work to upgrade the quay, bollards, channelling and bumpers, which will be resumed and completed once the cranes have been unloaded. The unloading and positioning of the cranes, which have arrived assembled on the ship's deck from the factory in China, will take until at least 13 April. The new machinery is expected to be operational by the end of the second quarter of 2025.
