Target: to reduce PET consumption to a minimum

220225-reduce-pet-consumptionAPM Terminals Spanish Gateways is committed to minimising the consumption of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at its facilities. PET, the most common plastic used in plastic bottles for beverages. In Barcelona and Valencia terminals, plastic waste from water consumption represents 12,875 kilos per year and the emission of 45 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. But these figures are numbered, a system of water fountains in buildings and cranes will help to reduce it as much as possible and make water consumption more responsible.

The project is called Target: PET 0, and has begun with the installation of the fountains in Barcelona terminal buildings. In a second phase, once the prototype for the cranes has been validated, the manufacture and installation of the fountains will begin. In total, there will be 38 fountains in Barcelona and 38 in Valencia, which will help to eliminate the consumption of plastics, reduce the resources needed for cleaning the facilities and for waste management.

"According to the certifications provided by suppliers and manufacturers, the water fountains are made from recycled and recyclable material, and the bottles are reusable, with a life cycle of up to 10 fillings with mineral water," explained project leader José Antonio Lozano, Facility Manager, who added that the new fountains provide both hot and cold water, making it possible to consume hot drinks on the quay.

With this system of mineral water fountains, in addition to reducing emissions into the atmosphere by eliminating the consumption of PET, by using half-litre reusable bottles and only using what we drink, we will use 20% less water.
