APM Terminals Algeciras focuses a new edition of the Go Green on sustainability in the workplace
The company celebrates with employees, stevedores, contractors and transporters a virtual day of environmental awareness to share initiatives
Algeciras, Spain – APM Terminals Algeciras today celebrated with its employees, stevedores, contractors and carriers a new local edition of the Go Green, an initiative promoted each year by the largest port operators in the world to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. This year, on the occasion of the Covid-19 and to comply with health protocols, the appointment has been held virtually, by videoconference.
“Respecting and conserving the environment must begin with sustainable gestures in our immediate surroundings, in the workplace. For this reason, initiatives such as Go Green are important, to share moments of awareness, exchange ideas and also thank the good work done ”, declared the HSSE director of APM Terminals Algeciras, Alberto Rodríguez Sánchez.
Maximizing energy efficiency and reducing resource consumption are the main objectives of all the projects carried out at APM Terminals Algeciras, either for the acquisition of machinery or for the implementation of measures to achieve their achievement. As a result, the terminal already recycles 71% of the waste generated and, in 2019, its team managed to reduce to 55 gigawatts the electricity used to handle the 4 million TEUs handled. This is the energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of one third of the homes in a residential area of the city, and comes from renewable sources certified by the utility companies.
In addition to the videoconference, which served to share with all the people who work in the largest container terminal in Spain the way in which all its environmental aspects are managed and how to react in an emergency, it included environmental walks in small groups to bring the awareness message of the day to each job and exchange ideas for improvement.
Algeciras joins the Go Green movement for the seventh consecutive edition, and is the only terminal of the group that has not wanted to miss the opportunity to celebrate it. The initiative is the result of an agreement between the largest port operators in the world – APM Terminals, DP World, Hutchison Port Holdings, PSA and Shanghai International Port Group.
