162 Years of Serving as The Gateway for Caucasus

On November 18, Poti celebrates the anniversary of the day that Poti was declared as a port city, starting a new chapter in the city’s history through the establishment of the Poti Sea Port. 

It is now 162 years since Poti Sea Port first enabled the vital cargo flows which support and improve people’s lives in and around Georgia. Having started with transporting and exchanging the basic must-haves back in the 19th century, the port continues to develop to address contemporary global needs. Today, Poti Sea Port forms an integral part of the international logistics network, connecting business and customers across the world.

Poti Sea Port has affirmed its position as a key piece of infrastructure for the country and the entire region during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this period, it has proved essential for this vital gateway to remain seamlessly operational in a sustainable way to ensure the effective and uninterrupted functioning of the supply chain. 

Despite the current worldwide health emergency and its negative impact on economies across the globe, as we draw to the close of the year, we at APM Terminals Poti are glad to be able to share some highlights of this year for the Port’s 162nd Anniversary.

Modernizing infrastructure

After obtaining the First-Step (Land-Usage) Permit from the Government of Georgia in March, our project team is working on further steps for the development of the new deep-water port, while the company in general actively prepares for the future infrastructural set-up by reinforcing the port equipment fleet: A new Mobile Harbor Crane from Gottwald and 8 new Terminal Tractors were purchased in 2020 – a significant addition to enhance the equipment capacity of the port.

Supporting local community

As a company with a high focus on Corporate Social Responsibility, APM Terminals Poti has been supporting Poti Maritime College from its very establishment. In support of this crucial forward-looking initiative of the government, APM Terminals Poti is contributing a Crane Simulation Lab to the college with the purpose of creating new opportunities for, and encouraging, local youth, while raising the popularity of maritime career streams in the community.

Safety culture improvement

A sustainable safety culture is integral to APM Terminals Poti. Therefore, we are proud to be able to state that APM Terminals Poti marks more than a year without any human-related incidents, as a reward of the continuous effort to improve safety and effectiveness of our operations.

Poti Sea Port was established through hard work on a variety of projects, considerations and challenges. After more than 160 years, we stand proud in the belief that further development and expansion of Poti Sea Port will cement the role of the port as a gateway for the long-term. The people of Poti and its vicinity will continue to embrace this rich maritime history, serving Georgia and the entire region over the many years to come.
