APM Terminals Kalundborg boosts circular-sustainability

APM Terminals Kalundborg is making big strides in reducing resource inefficiencies and boosting the circular economy. The terminal has joined the world's leading industrial symbiosis, Kalundborg Symbiosis, with a view to boosting community connectivity, reducing waste and optimising business efficiency.  

The terminal, operating since 2021, is located in the New West Port which links the Baltic and North Seas, and is close to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. It recently had is concession agreement extended by 10 years to 2033.

As a newly associated member of this European-Union backed, non-profit initiative, the terminal will participate in a unique exchange in which associate partners reduce the waste of water and energy to minimise environmental impact and continuously improve business efficiencies. In doing so, members of the association will actively look for synergies between their businesses, for example, using waste streams (such as heat or used materials) from one business to benefit another. 

Valuable member 

Michael Hallgren, Chair of Kalundborg Symbiosis said APM Terminals Kalundborg’s local commitment, innovation and global expertise would substantially contribute to the group. “We are excited about new possibilities that lie ahead and the positive impact we can collectively create for the local community and beyond,” he said.  

Lifting the standard of responsibility 

Nikolaj Klokholm, Execution Manager Kalundborg, APM Terminals Nordic said, “we embrace our responsibility to enhance and protect the planet that sustains us.” He added that the terminal’s involvement with the Symbiosis organisaton, “gives us a great opportunity to enter in a well-documented setup that has already created results and where we can have an honest and open debate about sustainable development for the greater good.” 

The Symbiosis project – a collaboration between companies, organisations and public and private sectors – was established in 1972. Its members represent industries such as recycling, animal food, sustainable construction materials, and biotechnologies.
