New cranes set sail for APM Terminals Mumbai

This week, the first batch of two Ship to Shore cranes and 3 Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes set sail from China. Destined for APM Terminals Mumbai (Gateway Terminals India) they form part of a US$115 million investment to meet customer needs for larger vessel capability and increase container handling capacity at the terminal by 10% to 2.18 million TEUs.

Berth 1 at APM Terminals Mumbai closed for operations this month to start preparations for the installation of the new cranes, which included the decommissioning of five smaller cranes. The new cranes will have a 23-containers outreach and be capable of handling the largest vessels that call Nhava Sheva's Jawaharlal Nehru port.

Faster vessel turnaround

Completion of the ‘Fit for Future’ investment at APM Terminals is on schedule for early September and will see the terminal not only increase capability to handle bigger vessels, but also increase efficiency through the faster turnaround of vessels and creating value for end customers.

Referencing the 500, and counting, incident-free days chalked up at the terminal project site, Sunay Mukerjee, Chief Operating Officer, APM Terminals Mumbai said: “We are making our terminal safer, better, and bigger. We can achieve this in large part because of the dedication of our people, who demonstrate an exemplary work culture to serve our customers and to keep Safety at the core of our operations.”

APM Terminals Mumbai is the highest volume terminal in India, handling 2 million TEUs per year. The terminal has 712 M of quay length and covers 63 Hectares.

Dedicated Freight Corridor

APM Terminals Mumbai is connected to the hinterland via NH4B, NH4, NH17, NH 3 & 8 and a State Highway 54. The upcoming Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) will seamlessly connect the terminal with Mumbai. The upcoming Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) from Dadri to JNPT will connect the terminal to northern India on electrified route. APM Terminals Mumbai is well connected to 47 ICD locations and 3 CFS across the country via rail.
