Low emissions berth-right at Pier 400

The berthing of a brand-new container ship would melt any heart, as was the case when Maersk Glacier called at APM Terminals’ Pier 400 in Los Angeles on the West Coast Central America (WCCA) line last week.

The vessel, sailing under her Panamanian flag, departed from Los Angeles on August 5, and is due to arrive at Manzanillo Mexico August 13.

The ship, freshly minted this year, has a 3,500 TEU capacity and draught of 8.9 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 200 metres, and her width is 36.4 meters. But aside from being neatly proportioned, the Glacier is also aptly named, because she cuts through carbon emissions too.

The ship is part of a series of 10 energy-efficient vessels chartered for seven years for the Intra-Americas trade by our customer, Maersk. Each has a 12-15% improved fuel efficiency per TEU, gained from optimized hull design and technologies.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Maersk Glacier is so named after the Glacier National Park in Montana. In a nod to their environmental credentials, each of the vessels being released for Maersk/Sealand are named after a US National Park.
