SCCT Welcomes VIPs
The Suez Canal Container terminal (SCCT) welcomed the Egyptian Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs, Dr. Nabila Makram and the Head of the Suez Canal Authority and Chairperson of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Vice Admiral Mohab Mamish to East Port Said in July, to review ongoing development projects. The government officials were accompanied by a delegation from the Egyptian-American Cultural Club. The visit was organized to provide a look at the state-of-the-art facility, which can serve as a role model for planned new expansions at the port.
SCCT Terminal Manager Jan Buijze welcomed the guests, and noted that SCCT and APM Terminals, SCCT’s main shareholder and operator, continuously explore opportunities for the terminal to maintain pace with the rapid developments in the global port industry. East Port Said has become one of the fastest-growing container ports on the Mediterranean Sea, as well as an increasingly important global transportation hub.
Mr. Hany El Nady, SCCT’s Head of Public and Government Relations, affirmed that the terminal is considered a key partner for success in the development process of East Port Said region. He added that the company has invested USD $850 Million since assuming operational control of the terminal in 2004. SCCT is currently the only terminal in Egypt capable of receiving and handling vessels of 18,000 TEU capacity, which has significantly enhanced the competitiveness of Egypt in the global logistic chain.
The Suez Canal completed an expansion in August 2015 which enabled two-way vessel traffic, eliminating convoy waiting times. In November 2016 a new access channel was opened to Port Said East, enabling 24-hour access to SCCT. A total of 16,833 ships transited the Suez Canal in 2016, including 5,414 container ships. Throughput at SCCT was 2.54 million TEUs for the year.
