Lifting standards — and unlocking opportunities — for the Gemini Network

Strategically placed APM Terminals hubs play a vital role in helping to deliver the reliability and predictability ambitions set by the new Gemini Cooperation — a collaboration between Maersk & Hapag-Lloyd.

That was one of the main messages in a webinar presented ahead of the big day of the launch on February 1. APM Terminals’ Head of Hubs Lars Mikael Jensen explained that it’s mostly the efficiency and reliability of these terminals that will help ease the flow and deliver on faster turnarounds in the Network of the Future introduced by the Gemini collaboration. By way of example, he mentioned optimally scheduled maintenance and repairs as just one of game-changers made possible by to the collaboration and visibility integration between hub terminals and the shipping lines.

Thirty percent more container moves

APM Terminals anticipates being able to handle 30% more container moves at hub terminals due to the investment of 3 billion dollars in expansions of berth facilities, cranes and equipment — and years of preparation with partners. Gearing up for Gemini has already eased the logistics flow at key APM Terminals locations in the first half of 2024, said Jensen. “That is because of that collaboration, a close integration between the Ocean execution team at Maersk and our hub terminals when we get a ship, and the number of moves we can plan (ahead),” he said.

Twice as fast

Comparing APM Terminals’ hubs efficiency speeds in handling a vessel, Jensen said the terminals were twice as fast in the first half of 2024 compared to 2016.

“That gives me confidence that when we then get going with Gemini, our terminal hubs will get increased visibility from the customer, and respond with even greater reliability,” he said.

The APM Terminals locations operating as Gemini hubs are APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Rotterdam in the Netherlands; APM Terminals Algeciras, Spain; APM Terminals Tangier, Morocco; Medport Tangier, Morocco; Suez Canal Container Terminal, Port Said/Egypt; Port of Salalah, Oman; as well joint ventures in the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia and North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven, Tyskland in Germany.
