New Road Safety Standards
In observation of United Nations’ Global Road Safety Week (May 8th through 14th) APM Terminals’ Office of Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainability has introduced the first global Road Safety standards to be implemented across the APM Terminals port and Inland Services portfolio. The standards will apply to any APM Terminals vehicle used in operation on any public roadways; APM Terminals owned and operated vehicles, including cars, trucks and busses, are driven more than one million km (621,000 miles, or approximately 25 times around the equator) every day on official APM Terminals work-related trips. These include the mandatory equipping and usage of seat belts and in-vehicle monitoring systems for all company vehicles, and establish driving time limits and emergency road kit contents. The standards are expected to be in place throughout APM Terminals’ global terminal network and Inland Services locations by the end of 2018.
According to the World Health Organization there are 1.25 million traffic-related fatalities annually around the world. It is estimated that approximately half of these fatalities are the result of drivers exceeding posted speed limits.
