Mobile on the Move

Mobile, Alabama USA - With the arrival of two new super post-panamax STS cranes in a few weeks, APM Terminals Mobile is continuing its rapid ascent as the port of choice serving the Gulf of Mexico and the Southeastern USA. The clear advantages of Mobile (Alabama) over the nearby Port of New Orleans (Louisiana) have led the terminal, which opened in 2008, to “gear up for growth”. The expansion of the Panama Canal locks and the opening of a new Wal-Mart regional distribution center, along with the increase in automotive manufacturing in Alabama and the surrounding region, will continue to be major drivers of Mobile’s growth in the years ahead. The new cranes, with a container reach 22-rows wide, and the port’s 45 foot draft, are able to accommodate vessels of up 14,000 TEU capacity, the new “Panamax” limit of the expanded canal locks.

Originally 95 acres in area, the APM Terminals Mobile Phase II expansion will add another 20 acres to the facility as part of a $47.5 million infrastructure investment which will increase annual throughput capacity to 500,000 TEUs. A Phase 3 expansion can increase annual throughput capacity to 700,000 TEUs when necessary. Auto parts are the terminal’s largest import at present. Over 1.5 million cars and trucks are produced annually at factories within four hours of the terminal, which is served by an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility which opened last year, providing easy access to inland points. The new Wal-Mart distribution center alone represents 40,000 TEUs of imports per year.

The terminal handled 277,307 TEUs in 2016, but as pointed out by Managing Director Brian Harold on his recent visit to The Hague, for APM Terminals Mobile, “We're well equipped to support the Port of Mobile's continued growth."
