Madrid Maersk Maiden Voyage

The 20,568 Maersk Madrid, the first of 11 of the second-generation Maersk Triple-E vessels to be delivered to the global container ship fleet, is completing the first leg of its maiden voyage on the Far East-Europe (AE-2) service operated by Maersk Line and Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping’s 2M Alliance.

Launched in March 2017 at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering yard in Korea, with an April stop at the Port of Tianjin, China, Madrid Maersk made its first Southeast Asian port call at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), part of the APM Terminals global terminal network, on the 16th of May. APM Terminals holds a minority share in the facility, which has undergone a $470 million expansion. The improvements include the construction of two new berths along with upgraded cranes, which have increased the terminal’s annual throughput capacity by 24%, to 12.5 million TEUs. PTP now regularly handles ULCS calls of 18,000 TEU-class capacity vessels and above.

From Malaysia, the Madrid Maersk called APM Terminals Tangier, near the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and North Europe. At the Moroccan Tanger-Med port facility 5,520 TEUs were moved onto and off of the Madrid Maersk. In March 2016 APM Terminals signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) for the development and operation of a 5 million TEU annual capacity transshipment terminal as part of Tanger-Med Phase II. The new facility, APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, is scheduled to open in 2019, will be the first automated container terminal in Africa.

At present, there are 405 ULCS in service in the global fleet, with 53 of these of 18,000 TEU capacity or greater; another 52 ships of this category have been ordered. The APM Terminals global terminal network is able to meet the needs of these vessels, along with the evolving global fleet, with terminal operations setting industry-leading standards for efficiency, productivity and safety.
