Faster Container Handling in Callao

APM Terminals Callao has signed a cooperation agreement with the National Customs and Tax Administration of Peru (SUNAT) to enable the “real-time” exchange of information online to streamline and facilitate container cargo processing at Peru’s largest port. SUNAT will have access to APM Terminals Callao’s cargo tracking systems as part of the data exchange process, speeding up cargo handling and improving security measures. The new procedures will go into effect in the first quarter of 2017.

Peru has the 5th-largest economy in South America, and it has been projected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to expand by 3.7% in 2016 and 4.1% in 2017.

Approximately 70% of Peru’s foreign trade is handled at the Port of Callao, the busiest container port on the west coast of South America.

APM Terminals was selected by the Peruvian Government to operate Terminal Muelle Norte at the Port of Callao, now operating as APM Terminals Callao, in 2011, and assumed control of the facility in July 2011 under a 30-year concession. The facility is being developed into a modern multipurpose terminal for containers, general cargo, Ro-Ro cargo, break bulk and cruise ships representing an investment of over USD $800 million. Work on the expansion started in October 2012 and at full build out the terminal will be able to handle 2.9 million TEUs and 9.9 million tons of non?containerized cargo. The Port of Callao has been projected to handle 4 million TEUs by 2018.
