Climate Change Conference Concludes

Marrakech, Morocco - APM Terminals was a participant in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, held from November 7th through the 18th, in this historical Moroccan city near the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, presenting on environmentally sustainable terminal operations, and hosting an information booth for conference guests and visitors.

APM Terminals MedPort Tangier Managing Director Dennis Olesen addressed conference on the subject of “Ports of the Future; Our vision for the future using safety, technology and innovation”, and noted that green energy sources, such as wind and solar power are emerging as important tools in environmentally sustainable port operations throughout the APM Terminals portfolio. At the Port of Rotterdam, APM Terminals’ Maasvlakte II terminal is the world’s first carbon-neutral container facility, and in Algeciras, where all terminal electricity  used by APM Terminal Algeciras is supplied by green wind-powered energy providers.

“We design sustainability and optimized safety performance into our terminals and other operations from initial concept to operational implementation. Striving for the best possible outcome for our business and society means taking into account our interaction with communities and the natural environment. We aim to avoid, reduce or mitigate potential negative impacts and we manage this through a process called Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)” said Mr. Olesen.

APM Terminals is part of the Maersk Group, which has established a Group target for reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020, from a 2010 baseline reference point. By the end of 2015 the Maersk Group had achieved 23% reduction by this measure. Overseen by the Maersk Group Sustainability Council, all business units are required to develop strategies and targets to reduce their environmental impact in line with their respective materiality and risk assessments. Performance is monitored and progress reported every six months.
The global maritime industry produced nearly one billion tons of CO2 in 2012, representing approximately 2.2% of all global CO2 emissions.
