First direct port delivery by rail at APM Terminals Mumbai (GTI)

APM Terminals Mumbai (Gateway Terminals India – GTI) successfully despatched its first Direct Port Delivery (DPD) import containers by rail this weekend. Traditionally evacuated by road, switching to rail offers clear benefits to GTI by reducing gate traffic (average 3500 containers move through GTI gates each day) and to customers as rail movement is more cost-effective than road.

APM Terminals Mumbai provides a DPD Service within six hours of vessel discharge. Using DPD, containers are delivered to the end user directly from the port with an average dwell time of only 1.5 days, compared to a typical dwell time of 9-10 days. This is the fastest in the country.

Rail movements offer a much more sustainable alternative to traditional road transportation and significantly reduce emissions. By leveraging rail infrastructure, GTI aims to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the logistics industry.

This milestone was made possible through a collaborative effort with CONCOR and support from JNPA. The first rakes rolled out on 11th & 12th May, 2024. The inaugural rail movement saw 2 rakes moving from GTI rail siding at Nhava Sheva to Varnama ICD, Vadodara.

The commitment towards innovation and sustainability by all parties involved has paved the way for future rail initiatives and underscores the importance of such partnerships to drive positive change.

This initiative supports GTI’s strategic ambition of increasing the volume of containers coming in and out of JNPA port and the terminal by rail and reaffirms its commitment to lifting the standard of sustainability and efficiency.
