“It’s easy to transport goods by rail”

“It's true. There's availability by rail and it’s just as easy to book transport by rail as any other mode of transport,” confirms Svante Altås, salesman at APM Terminals Gothenburg with 20 years’ experience in rail solutions.

At present, 62 permanent rail shuttles arrive at APM Terminals in Gothenburg every week. Next year, there are plans to increase this to up to 72 shuttles per week.

“No lack of space on railways”

"There is enormous demand for rail solutions, which is why we are increasing the number of slot times to meet these needs. We can see that existing customers will be increasing their volumes next year. At the same time, we are opening up for new destinations, both close and far. For example, we are looking forward to receiving a new commuter service from the Stockholm region with arrivals to Gothenburg six times a week," says Altås.

“Though we already handle more than 4,500 containers by rail per week, we have the capacity to receive at least as many more. There is no shortage of space and the tracks aren't congested,” he explains.

The climate and a shortage of drivers are important incentives for using rail

"Many countries are experiencing an acute shortage of lorry drivers, and we are seeing the same trend in Sweden. This makes it natural to redirect flows to rail," says Altås.

"And pleasingly enough, the interest in climate-smart transport is also growing rapidly. As a salesperson, I am noticing how environmental aspects are taking their rightful place in corporate agendas for choosing transport solutions," he continues.

A reliable logistics solution

Surveys show that 99% of shuttles leave APM Terminals at the planned departure time.

"This reliability naturally provides our customers with security. Meanwhile, rail solutions are highly efficient for the supply chain, as import containers are converted to export containers in a continuous flow through triangulation," Altås explains.

“Booking rail solutions is easy, even from 1,400 kilometres away”

"Booking rail solutions is now as easy as booking lorry transports with the easiest way being to book space on existing shuttles. During the year, a completely new shuttle started running to Piteå, 1,400 km from Gothenburg. Despite the distance, the solution is just as quick and efficient. Once the opportunity is available, the ripple effect takes hold and it is more frequently utilised.
